Knowledge burst: Ten tasks to prepare post-merger integration

Say, you have acquired a company but not closed yet. How do you best prepare for merger integration?

  1. Assess and document pre-merger processes and systems for both companies.

  2. Develop a comprehensive integration plan that outlines the objectives, timelines, and resources needed for the merger.

  3. Identify and prioritize key business functions that need to be integrated, such as finance, operations, and IT.

  4. Establish a clear communication plan to keep all stakeholders informed of progress and any changes.

  5. Establish a shared vision and culture for the merged company.

  6. Identify and address potential cultural differences between the two companies.

  7. Establish a governance structure and decision-making process for the merged company.

  8. Identify and retain key personnel from both companies.

  9. Address any legal and regulatory requirements related to the merger.

  10. Monitor and evaluate the progress of the integration, and make adjustments as needed.
