M&A Target search innovation: part 1

This blog is in the Top 25 M&A blogs worldwide according to Feedspot

At the recent M&A Summit in Munich i was asked to present my view on automation for target search, so i created a series of blogs. This is the first part. It´s about which technologies can be used in target search based on a study of 17 tools. In the figure below you see the tasks and subtasks related to target search. on the right side you see the tools studied, of which 17 were considered.

The next question is: which technologies could be used for automation, which are listed below.

Based on this list and the tasks and subtasks, we can combine both and provide an overview which technologies are used for which tasks and subtasks. Let us start with technologies that are around for a long time already, analytics and natural language processing (NLP). the blue columns show for each subtask how many tools of the 17 overall use the technology. The result shows that technologies that are around for some time are also applied widely by about half of the tools.

But what about younger technologies like machine learning and knowledge graphs? Here, only few of the tools (3 ML and 2 knowledge graphs) make use of these hot technologies although they are well suited for target search.

Using this approach we can also make transparent, which tools automate which parts of target search, which i will discuss for four tools in the next part of this blog series.
